Chapter 14 Summary

One Saturday, Sal is at Phoebe's again. Her father is golfing, and her mother is running errands. Mrs. Winterbottom reads out a long list of how she can be reached. If they hear any noises, they are to call the police immediately. After calling the police, she says, call Mrs. Cadaver to come over. She is the last person Phoebe wants to call. Phoebe is so jumpy, imagining that every noise is from the lunatic or the message-leaver, that it begins to make Sal uneasy, too.

After her mother leaves, Phoebe comments on Mrs. Cadaver's odd work hours. Sal guesses it's because she's a nurse and works different shifts. That day, Mrs. Cadaver is home, puttering around her garden. Phoebe and Sal watch her from Phoebe's bedroom window. Actually what she's doing is more.....
