The Potential for a Superior Alien Race

Neuvel explores the potential for a superior alien race in order to exemplify humanity’s comfort in their current standing. Most people feel invulnerable as the most intelligent life form on Earth. Even though there are disasters that frighten them, humans tend to view themselves as capable of survival. However, when the alien robots appear on Earth, this belief changes. Ironically, humans meet Kronos’ initial appearance in London with open arms. They view Kronos as a friendly robot, like they have come to see Themis due to the EDC’s efforts to appear as protectors over the past few years. However, Kronos decimates half of London in a single attack, leaving hundreds of thousands of dead. At this point, the surviving humans realize that the aliens are a huge threat and humans are completely helpless to combat them.
