Carrie and Janie are juniors. They are waiting for the bus on the first day of school, when they notice a loner, stoner boy they know, Cabel. Carrie teases Janie that it's her boyfriend. Janie says he has welfare parents like her. Carrie admits to only hanging out with Melinda because she is rich. Nobody dreams on that first day of school, so Janie comes home relieved.

Carrie and Stu, the older guy Carrie's father was yelling about her dating, knock on Janie's window. They are dressed for the homecoming dance. Carrie holds up a silver dress she borrowed from Melinda and tells Janie to put it on so she can go. Janie goes to the dance, dances with one boy that is shorter than her, puts his head on her chest and grabs her...
