Carrie and Janie are juniors. They are waiting for the bus on the first day of school, when they notice a loner, stoner boy they know, Cabel. Carrie teases Janie that it's her boyfriend. Janie says he has welfare parents like her. Carrie admits to only hanging out with Melinda because she is rich. Nobody dreams on that first day of school, so Janie comes home relieved.
Carrie and Stu, the older guy Carrie's father was yelling about her dating, knock on Janie's window. They are dressed for the homecoming dance.
