As the story unfolds, the readers learn about the many secret fears and desires that the people in Janie's life have through her ability to see into their dreams. Janie realizes she has this ability when she is eight years old. Janie continues to get pulled into people's dreams from this point on. When Janie is a senior in high school, she learns how to control her transition in and out of the dream and how to help the people maneuver the situations they are in during their dreams.

When Janie starts to get into the dreams of the school outcast, Cabel, she sees him in his dreams that transforms into a monster with knives for fingers. Cabel is always killing a middle-aged man in his dreams. As Janie and Cabel get to know each other better, they become friends, and eventually fall in love. Janie learns that the man in Cabel's dream is Cabel's abusive father that passed away a few years earlier. Janie also learns that Cabel is an undercover informant for the local police.
