Although Rayber and Tarwater are at cross purposes on the fishing trip, Tarwater seems to be returning to his old self in the country and eats ravenously after not eating much at all while in the city. Tarwater even shows some kindnesses to Bishop who is normally a huge source of aggravation.
Tarwater is also receiving messages from the stranger's voice again, and now Tarwater considers this presence a friend telling Tarwater to wait for the appropriate time to baptize Bishop. The voice also tells Tarwater that the Lord speaks to prophets directly, and this has not happened yet for Tarwater.
