Lieutenant-General Byng at Twilight Summary

One evening Mathilde lets her father read all that she has collected in the mahogany box. When he is finished he simply has no words to comfort her. The next morning she receives a telegram from Germain Pire confirming that he indeed has not found anything, as she had suspected. The next day Mathilde receives yet another telegram from Germain Pire simply telling her that Manech is alive and that he will come to her as soon as possible. The night that Germain sends this telegram he pens Mathilde a letter which contains more details of his findings. Germain Pire has just come from seeing Manech, who is in Milly-la-Foret and is in good health other than suffering from complete amnesia. Manech has never regained any memory of his life prior.....
