Part Two: Chapters 20-21 (pg 262-293) Summary

The next day, the entire camp gets a surprise. Brian Chatworth, Roger's younger brother, has arrived. He wishes to fight with the Montgomerys against Roger. Apparently, Brian was in love with Mary. He is furious that his brother's actions drove her to take her own life. Raine does not want to listen to Brian's plea. Alyx berates Raine for being so pigheaded.

Out of the forest comes a roar of laughter. Stephan, Raine's other older brother, has arrived. He is pleased to see that his little's brother's wife has such a spirit. Alyx and Stephan immediately take a liking to one another. Stephan attempts to discuss family situations with Raine, but he refuses to listen. The two brothers retire deeper into the forest to talk, but their talking quickly turns into a fight. Alyx is nervous that Raine will pulverize Stephan, but she is shocked when Raine returns bruised and bloody.

Alyx tends to Raine's bruises and he finally apologizes for his actions over the last couple of months. He realizes that he has treated her badly, but he does not want her to disobey him again. Alyx quickly disagrees and puts up a fight, but Raine tells her that she has put him through enough. He will not be disobeyed...
