From the beginning of their journey, Gabrielle takes off for several nights and breaks the journey. Each time she comes back, Lestat tells her of the news from home but she is not interested. She does not understand why Lestat cannot let go of mortal things from his past life. The distance between them grows. As they continue on through Istanbul and Greece, Lestat continues to leave messages for Marius and Gabrielle explores places on her own and is rarely by Lestat's side.
