Obsession

V. represents an obsession for Stencil. By finding out what happened to her, he feels that in some way he will come to know his father. He makes the quest to discover V. his sole purpose in life. When he sees he may be getting close to the truth, completing the quest by going to Malta, he backs down, scared it may come to an end and he will have nothing to go on to. However, he finds the trail continues and he will be able to follow her trail further. While V. is primarily represented as a mysterious woman who appears at different places and times, she can also be seen in several places and objects throughout the novel.
