Summary

In Chapter 7, Agnieszka avoids Sarkan for a day, only to realize that he must have been avoiding her as well. They pick up their lessons but in awkward silence. Villagers had ascertained that Sarkan and Agnieszka were not infected by their encounter with the wolves and handed over the fire-heart. One day, Kasia's mother, Wensa, arrives at the tower and announces three Walkers from the Wood grabbed Kasia that morning. The Walkers are made of trees and Agnieszka describes their appearance as that of a “twig-insect” (99). Wensa begs Agnieszka to save Kasia, and Agnieszka knows Wensa would never have asked Sarkan for help. Sarkan says the quest is impossible. Agnieszka takes Jaga's magic book, slips out of the tower, and asks Borys – who drove Wensa to the tower – to drive her to the Wood in his sleigh.
