Topeka, Kansas

A little over half of the memoir takes place in Topeka, where the author is from and where Westboro originated and still operates. After the church began their inflammatory and aggressive protest campaign, first at Gage Park and then in other locations as well, they were subject to counter protests, assaults, and vandalism, as many residents of Topeka firmly disagreed with their dogma. The author recalls in particular an incident at a restaurant called the Vintage, where several of her family members were badly hurt by men that had been hired to attack them, and a city district attorney that was determined to prosecute them on any charges she could find. Westboro only returned the city's antagonism, protesting with signs that read "TOPEKA: A CITY OF WHORES" (22), for example.
