Summary

In Chapter 10, "The Blue of Time," MacFarlane travels to Greenland, to Kulusuk Island, to visit the Apusiajik Glacier with friends. He arrives in summer, amid some of the hottest temperatures ever recorded in Greenland. The opening image of the chapter depicts a man skinning a porpoise in Kulusuk, the small village where MacFarlane’s friend Matt lives. MacFarlane also mentions Camp Century, the former U.S. cold war base that begun to rise from the ice in 2016 because of warming temperatures, bringing with it all the toxic waste it contained. MacFarlane’s friend Matt, who has lived in the village 16 years, says that no one has ever seen a year like 2016. Mosquitoes appeared in the village for the first time.
