Captain Meriwether Lewis

Lewis, the principle subject of the biography, was born August 1774 and died October 1809. He is best remembered as the leader of the Corps of Discovery. Lewis was born in Albemarle County, Virginia, to William Lewis and Lucy Lewis nye Meriwether. When he was ten, he moved with his family to Georgia. At thirteen, he was sent to Virginia to receive his education by private tutor. He attended an academy for a brief period, graduated, and then entered the volunteer militia in 1794 where he participated in the suppression of the Whiskey Rebellion. In 1795, he entered the regular army and served there until 1801. During his military service, he briefly served under the command of William Clark; his last assignment was as paymaster, which enabled him to widely travel and ascertain.....
