The Berengaria

The Berengaria is the ship that Assan takes to the United States in “Go See Costas.” He works hard on the ship and hides his friend in the walls, sneaking him to the country, as well. The act of sailing to America in an escape from communism depicts the freedom that America represents for many from all over the world. The chief of the ship realizes that Assan is hiding his friend, but admires his work ethic and appreciates that the act of deceptiveness has not brought the captain any issues. Aiding Assan in hiding his friend, he lies to Assan and tells him that there will be police checking papers in New York City. With this warning, Assan tells his friend to get off in Philadelphia. Really, it is the captain of the ship who makes sure that things are in order upon docking...
