Implicit Bias

In Chapter 1, Acho discusses the concept of ‘implicit bias,’ which generally refers to racial discrimination that is undertaken subconsciously. For example, Acho cites a study in which people with traditionally Black-sounding names received fewer job interviews than people who did not have Black-sounding names. Acho advocates for the importance of recognizing implicit bias both within oneself and others.

White Privilege

‘White privilege’ is a term that was coined by scholar Peggy McIntosh in 1988. This term refers to any social, political, or economic asset that is generally provided to white people and denied to non-white people. Acho acknowledges that there are certainly individual white people who face many challenges, but he clarifies that white people’s race is never the source of major challenges for them. Meanwhile, non-white people often face race-based discrimination.
