Act 3 Summary

This scene takes place in the drawing room. Yelena paces thoughtfully while Vanya and Sonya watch. Vanya announces that the Professor has asked everyone in the house to gather for some kind of announcement, and comments that Yelena staggers as she walks from sheer laziness. Yelena talks of being bored with Vanya talking all the time, and of being bored in general. Sonya tells her there are lots of things she could do, if she felt like it: work on the estate, visit the sick, go to market. Yelena says none of those things would be interesting and it's only in books that people find fulfillment from doing good things for others. She tells Yelena that everybody around has changed because of her. Vanya doesn't work any more, but follows her around all day. Sonya has stopped working to come and keep her...
