Summary

The open-source startup where Anna now works is a well-established institution in Silicon Valley. It has no hierarchy and employees have a lot of freedom. For example, business hours do not exist and vacation time is unlimited. Anna spends her first week reading backlogs of employee communications in the workplace chat rooms to familiarize herself with the corporate culture and company history. In her second week, she flies to Chicago for a regular in-person meeting with her teammates that lasts a few days. Anna likes her new teammates and about half of them are women but by the second night they start to complain about the company culture which they feel has not evolved with the company's success and is still dealing with the aftermath of the sexism scandal.
