Summary

In Chapter 31, Katie struggles with whether it is right to read Pat's diary. Katie decides she will allow herself to read for only 10 minutes and that she would never look again. She begins to read and quickly realizes Pat had been upset by all the changes taking place. Katie begins to see that Pat actually dad very little with her time, other than taking care of the house. In one entry, she wrote that Caroline wanted to go to London to live with Mary, and that she could see Caroline acting like Mary. That surprises Katie. Though Caroline had said she avoided wearing the clothing Mary bought for her, Pat wrote that Mary wore them often, just to annoy Pat. Pat described clashes, including an argument after she heard Caroline had kissed a boy. Katie realizes that Pat was suffering from depression and...
