Summary

In Chapter 6, Katie finds Mary wandering around the neighborhood. Mary insists she has an errand to run but will not say what it is. Back in the apartment, Caroline asks where she was going. Mary is frustrated that she cannot hold onto the thought of what she was doing. Mary feels the need to remember the number 23. Chris gives her a pen and Mary writes it on the couch while he is looking for paper. Mary asks Chris's age, and says 14 is “the age of adventure” (36). Katie asks why Mary hired someone to look for Caroline. She says Caroline was missing, and that the detective was terribly expensive.
