Summary

In Chapter 1, Katie Baxter is at the hospital with her mother, Caroline, and her brother, Chris. Caroline's mother, Mary Todd, was brought to the hospital with a man named Jack, who died. Caroline was listed on his ID bracelet as his emergency contact. Caroline and Mary have been estranged for years but the social worker says that Mary, who is suffering from dementia, is not able to go home alone and there is no medical reason to keep her at the hospital. Caroline is upset, but finally agrees to take Mary home.
