Miles Archer

Miles Archer is one of the main characters and first-person narrators in the novel. Miles narrates most of his sections of the novel from six years prior.

Miles describes how he fell in love with Rachel when he first met her. When they learned their parents were dating, Miles tried to tell Rachel that they could not fall in love with each other. However, Miles and Rachel are not able to keep from falling in love. When Rachel discovers that she is pregnant, Miles takes charge and applies for married housing at college so they can still start college and be together.

Miles believes that he is responsible for Clayton’s death because he was unable to save him from his car seat after their car crash. Rachel blames Miles for Clayton’s death and leaves him because she cannot stand the constant reminders of the loss...
