New York City

New York City is the primary setting of the story. Lucien, Nathaniel, Amity, Lyle, and Madison all live in Manhattan. Lucien was born and raised here, and sees the city as a container for his identity. Nathaniel and his friends moved to the city after graduating from college. Nathaniel's friends all found prestigious jobs right away. Nathaniel did not join them until later. When his parents worried about his future, they begged Lucien to help Nathaniel orient to the city. He found Nathaniel a job and a place to live in Mr. Matsumoto's loft.

Though several years have passed since the 9/11 terrorist attacks, the city remains haunted by the catastrophe. Each of the characters has been impacted by the attacks, yet has chosen to remain in New York.
