He is a friend of Sir Toby Belch, a suitor to Sir Toby's rich niece, Olivia, and a participant in the play's subplot. (A subplot is a secondary or subordinate plot which often reflects on or complicates the major plot in a work of fiction such as a play.) In I.iii.20, Toby praises Sir Andrew Aguecheek for being gallant, or "as tall a man as any's in Illyria." He defends his friend as cultured and talented, claiming that Sir Andrew knows how to play a musical instrument and can speak "three or four languages word for word" (I.iii.25-28).
