Chapter 8, 'Fish, or Cut Bait' Summary

The signal fire is left burning and more survivors begin to join the group, including Caroline Myshiyeni, an Amazon type girl from Rod and Jimmy's class. When Jack is injured, Caroline takes her place on Rod's hunting team while Bob, an aspiring medical student, sees to her injury. Rod and Caroline hunt and Caroline kills without Rod's help, leaving him angry that she disobeyed his orders. Rod sets her straight and she agrees to follow his rule next time. Back at camp, the survivors keep coming in, increasing the size of the camp to such an extent that Rod suggests they begin building a stone wall to protect the perimeter of the camp from predators. One day, Rod tells a group of survivors headed by a young man named Jock McGowan to get to work...
