Chapter 3, Through the Tunnel Summary

Rod has trouble sleeping the night before the test because he is concerned about his parents. Therefore, Rod is late leaving for the test the following morning. Rod arrives just moments before the test is to begin, carrying a backpack with his supplies and a heavy winter suit in case the test is to be on a cold planet. Deacon Matson welcomes Rod and praises him for bringing the winter suit, but assuring him it is unnecessary. Rod then goes into the warehouse where the gate is located, first passing the gun stand and again considering going against his sister's advice.
