1980s, 1990s, early 2000s

The novel takes place during three distinct time periods. The first half of the novel (which is also the first half of Sarah’s novel) takes place in the 1980s. Sarah, David, and Karen begin their freshman year at CAPA in 1982, and the novel follows them during the next 2-3 years. The second half of the novel takes place in 1997 and is narrated by Karen. This section covers a time period of a few months, when Karen reconnects with David and Sarah, and they all become involved in the production of Martin’s new play. The novel brief final section takes place several years later, sometime in the early 2000s, when Claire visits CAPA on a mission to track down Karen with the help of old school files.
