Prologue Summary

On July 15, A.D. 391, Junius Venator and a group of Roman military men are just about to seal the cave that holds a vast array of treasures rescued from the destructive hands of Emperor Theodosius. They seal the entrance but barbarians attack, killing almost everyone in a ferocious battle that rages for hours. Venator is saved from the barbarians by the soldiers, and he makes his way into the water. There is a single ship sailing away but those on board do not return to his rescue. It will later be revealed that the captain feared for the life of his daughter who was on board. Venator does not immediately die but is taken in by villagers who accepted him as a prophet and sage. He later returns to the site of the battle to bury the bones and to leave a message...
