Summary

Gardo interjects to apologize for what he did to Olivia, having used her to get to Colva. He did what he did because he knew he would be leaving Behala laong with the other boys, and did not want to involve anyone else in their plan. Olivia begins her part of the story again, as she learned about Gabriel Olondriz's past from him. Working as an unpaid volunteer, he had discovered evidence that Senator Zapanta had siphoned thirty million dollars of aid from the UN, and he had found copies of false contracts. In reaction, his house was lit on fire, his driver and maid killed, and all the evidence destroyed. He was then accused of financial malpractice, defrauding the government, and orchestrating the murder of a prominent banker.
