Summary

Faye goes to visit her cousin, Lawrence, in Chapter 9. He is now divorced and living with his fiancé in an idyllic farmhouse in a village that is similar to the one he used to live in with his ex-wife. Faye knew that the divorce was coming because Lawrence had called her while he was in Rome with his current fiancé, Eloise, while he was still married. During the conversation, he talks about freedom. Faye knows that he has already made his decision and will not be swayed by what she says. When the divorce happens, his ex-wife, Susie, gets financial compensation and tries to turn people against him. Now, she is lonely, according to Lawrence, and tries to be nice to Lawrence and Eloise. He and Susie share custody of their daughter, Angelica. Eloise has two sons who live with them.
