Summary

In “Masquerade” (122) Juliet was invited to a party by Mrs. Scaife at a fancy house in Pall Mall. Perry gave her a pair of diamond earrings to wear, which were to be returned the next day. At the party, Juliet saw Clarissa, who said the MI5 code phrase, “Can I tempt you” (125). She explained that she was invited because of her father, the duke, who was a Fascist. Juliet went snooping around the upstairs room of the house and was discovered by the man in the astrakhan-collared coat she had seen in the park picking up Godfrey Toby's newspaper. She introduced herself as Iris Carter-Jenkins, and he responded, “Do be careful, Miss Armstrong” (128).
