Section 5: The Walk, pages 139-266 Summary

After they eat, Ora watches Avram stand slowly and imagines Ofer being with them, though she has been able to sneak little information to Avram about Ofer in the many years she has been forbidden to talk to him. Wondering what Ora wants from him, Avram asks where Ilan is, and Ora explains that they separated nine months ago. They walk without speaking, and Ora decides to tell Avram about Ofer if the right time comes "so at least he would know this person he had brought into the world" (page 144). Waking from a nightmare about officers knocking on her door, Ora feels a pain as they set off, and she hurries Avram along when she realizes the pain is Ofer. She tells him that the silence, not speaking to him about Ofer, is killing...
