Summary

On February 21st, the doctor tells Sophie that he feels the baby’s heartbeat. He tells her she can go on longer walks, but she cannot go up the hill behind her house. At home, Evelyn tells Sophie that she thinks Charlotte is gossiping to Mrs. Connor about Sophie. Although Sophie wants to keep her life private, she must tell Charlotte about the pregnancy as the former struggles to do chores. On March 3rd, Sophie attends a gathering at the General’s house despite not wanting to go. Evelyn mocks her for not feeling well, although Sophie does not understand why. When Sophie sees an Indian chief, she sees that no one that the party respects him. Secondly, she is appalled when a woman trips over an Asian boy and screams at him. On March 8th, the other wives arrive at her home unannounced...
