"Black Rock" Summary

The jet lands north of Albuquerque and the group drives through the desert to Black Rock. Along the way, Stern explains to his colleagues the concept of quantum foam; it is a term used to describe the ripples in space-time at the quantum level. ITC has located wormholes in this foam that allow them to travel to other universes. The wormholes are tiny, but large enough to transmit information. Stern realizes that Gordon is talking about encoding the information that makes up a person, and sending that information through the wormhole like a fax is sent through a telephone line. Gordon admits the amount of information that makes up a human being is voluminous and requires the parallel processing power of thirty-two billion computers to compress and encode. Stern is shocked to realize that ITC has developed a quantum computer.
