Andry Marek, second in command of the Dordogne project, takes Diane Kramer on a helicopter tour of the site. Kramer is irritated that the project head, Professor Edward Johnston, would send a twenty-nine year old assistant professor in his place. Marek explains that Johnston has a previous appointment with a minister from the French government. Knowing the Dordogne project is subject to the goodwill of the government, Kramer accepts Johnston's absence. As they fly over the excavation sites, Marek explains the function of the proton magnetometer, which helps them find buried walls and metals. ITC has funded all the high-tech equipment in use at the site.
