This excerpt documents an example of private warfare during the Hundred Years War in 1357, after Sir Oliver de Vannes, a well-regarded English knight, has taken over the towns of Castelgard and La Roque along the Dordogne River. History shows that Sir Oliver is well respected and loved by the people he rules. In April of 1357, a cruel former monk by the name of Arnaut de Cervole attacks and burns Castelgard with his band of renegade knights. He decimates the nearby Monastery of Sainte-Mire, murdering the monks and destroying a famous water mill on the Dordogne. Arnaut, nicknamed "the Archpriest," then chases Sir Oliver to the fortress at La Roque for a final showdown.
