Part 1, Chapter 3 Summary

Feather-headed Redival grows wanton, and her dallying with a young guardsman, Tarin, is found out. Tarin is castrated and sold into slavery, and the Fox and Orual are ordered never to let the "salt bitch" out of their sight. Redival fearfully submits but loathes Psyche, which brings the older sisters to blows. A year after their fight, troubles begin in Glome in the forms of a bad harvest, the refusal of two royal houses to ally in marriage, and Redival's mocking worship of Psyche as a goddess. Psyche objects that she has merely allowed a pregnant woman to kiss her to make her baby beautiful, something that has been repeated at least ten times. Orual warns Psyche it is dangerous to provoke the jealous gods, but the Fox calls this folly......
