Summary

Chapter Twenty-one sees Swan Necklace and Sound of Running Feet welcomed into the Assiniboin village with curiosity. Alighting Dove, Red Elk’s wife, treats them well. Charging Hawk, Red Elk’s son, is fierce, strong, and older than the young couple though he has no wife. After a restful sleep, Sound of Running Feet forgets her fear, and she and Swan Necklace are allowed to depart from the village the next morning. However, soon after, they are overtaken and within a few chaotic moments, she turns around and sees Swan Necklace with a stab wound in the neck, dead on the ground. Charging Hawk stands behind him, and Sound of Running Feet is taken hostage, losing consciousness and awaking eventually in a tipi with Alighting Dove.
