Summary

Chapter Nine begins optimistically, with Sound of Running Feet reporting that the Ne-mee-poo continue their march through the valley towards the Land of the Crows. The white settlers in this land do not bother them, even selling them materials they need and wishing them well. Chief Joseph, however, admits to his daughter that he is uneasy, knowing they are going further and further from the Land of the Wandering Waters and that he will die in an unknown land. Sound of Running Feet is momentarily saddened, until she realizes that this spell of peace will likely result in her marriage preparations being resumed. Riding her horse next to Swan Necklace, she dreams of their marriage and tells stories to the young children in the group about the origins of their people, to distract them on their long journey.
