Laurent and Thérèse begin their love affair as if they have been together for many years. Laurent asks for time off work for their meetings, and Thérèse explains to her aunt that she must go to bed for a headache. Thérèse tells Laurent about her miserable life. She takes little precaution in being discovered by her aunt, and this terrifies Laurent. Once, when Madame Raquin does come upstairs to check on Thérèse, Thérèse proves that they are not in danger of being discovered.
