Summary

In Chapter 13, at an establishment called the White Horse, Swish introduces Cliff to Gene, who is starting a literary magazine. Cliff agrees to submit a short story. He heads to his Old Man’s office to share the good news but his father brushes him off and hands him some money. Cliff meets Pal for a drink, and they bump into Rusty, who offers to read Cliff’s stories sometime.

In Chapter 14, Eden tells Miss Everett the good news of her promotion and to her surprise, she is not supportive and their regular meetings stop. Four months later, Miss Everett asks Eden if she would like to read some of her manuscripts for her, on the condition that she does not take them home.
