Henry David Thoreau

The hero of this book is depicted as a shy, quiet and kindly man. He is a talented craftsman and the perhaps the first true nature conservationist. He is a good friend, a good teacher and a model human being.

The real Henry David Thoreau displays additional qualities. He readily admits to disliking many people, especially when they gather in large crowds. His friend Emerson begins to think Henry is a "misanthropist" or hater of humanity and starts spending less time with him. Thoreau often rails against those who do not agree with him, but he is consistent in his opinions and outlook throughout his life. He develops a new idea in "Civil Disobedience" about how to protest government actions without resorting to violence. This notion of "passive resistance" inspires Gandhi and Martin Luther.....
