Summary

In Chapter 49, Odie and his friends reached the West Side Flats, where Forrest told them to meet a woman named Gertie. A boy called John Kelly, told them how to find Gertie. Albert sought out the owner of Morgan's Boatworks, Wooster Morgan. Walking to Gertie's, Odie saw happiness and freedom in the community. They met Gertie inside her café.

In Chapter 50, they met Forrest's brother Calvin, and his friend Tru. They listened to the men talk about fixing their boat. Gertie asked Odie and his friends to work with her.

In Chapter 51, during a shift at Gertie's, John Kelly rushed in for help; his mother was in labor. Gertie helped deliver the baby. The next morning, Odie helped John Kelly with his paper route.
