Summary

Titled: "Invierno"

This story, told in past tense, takes place when Yunior was a child and had just come to America. The readers are given some of Yunior's backstory, much that presently contributes to his ideologies. He never met his father until he showed up to take them away from the island. Yunior has a hard time around his father, who turns out to be very abusive. His mother is miserable too because she can’t learn English and she has nobody to speak to. Rafa is clearly the favorite, but even he is having trouble because their father won’t let them go outside.
