Summary

Opening Chapter 5, Kay is now a registrar. This means that he is to be “unimpeachably correct and clever,” the one who other doctors turn to for help (108). Although the responsibility is huge, Kay says that the day he started he was feeling extremely optimistic. He tells the reader that his life at work and home seemed to be “clicking into place” (109). Many of his colleagues were not as lucky, struggling with maintaining their relationships as a result of the extreme work hours and constant changes in schedule. Although life is generally quite difficult, Kay notes that things appear to be going well for him.
