Part 1, p. 5 - 35 Summary

"Yesterday - One Hour after School"

Clay arrives home to find a package waiting for him. He opens it, discovers that it contains a collection of numbered audio tapes, remembers that there's an old cassette player in his garage, goes out, slides in a tape, and starts to listen.

"Cassette 1: Side A"

The cassette begins with Hannah identifying herself. Clay reacts with shock and surprise, his narration revealing that Hannah killed herself a couple of weeks before. Later in this section, Clay's narration reveals that she took an overdose of pills. As Hannah's voice emerges from the player's speakers, Clay's narration reveals his responses - his fear and uneasiness (see "Quotes", p. 2), and his startled lies when his mother asks what he's doing; he says he's working on a school project.
