Shortly thereafter the District Commissioner arrives at Okonkwo's compound, accompanied by an armed band of soldiers and court messengers. A group of men are sitting in Okonkwo's obi; Obierika is among them. The Commissioner demands to know where Okonkwo is and Obierika takes them to him. At the rear of the compound is a small bush and a tree from which Okonkwo has hung himself.
Obierika asks if the DC's men will not take the body down for them. Killing oneself is a great offence and because of it Okonkwo will not be buried nor touched by his kinsmen. Obierika tells the DC that Okonkwo was one of the greatest men in Umuofia and that the DC drove him to kill himself and that now he will be buried like a dog. He orders.....
