Chapter 24 Summary
With the fine paid, the men are set free. They return to the village, which is by now abuzz in a quiet, downplayed way. That night the town crier once again announces that a meeting will be held in the market-place the following day. Okonkwo, although still bitter and angry, is somewhat excited at the prospect of a fight and before bed he examines his war dress, his smoked raffia skirt, tall feather head-gear and his shield.
Lying awake, he thinks of his treatment in the court and swears vengeance. He also thinks of the past and the war against Isike. He resolves to exact his own revenge if Umuofia does not declare war on the white man. In the morning, Okonkwo and Obierika walk to the market-place together and by the time they arrive there are already swarms of people there; Okonkwo is glad to see such numbers.
