Chapter 23 Summary
After the burning of the church, Okonkwo is happier than he has been in many years, as he feels the clan is returning to the way it was in the good old days; when a warrior was a warrior. And for two days afterwards, every man in Umuofia carries with him a matchet or gun so as not to be caught unaware like the people in Abame. When the District Commissioner returns from his tour, Mr. Smith goes to speak with him. Three days later, a court messenger arrives requesting the leaders of Umuofia to meet him in his headquarters.
Armed with their machetes (at Okonkwo's insistence) the men go to meet the Commissioner. They do so peacefully but shortly after they arrive are tricked and quickly overpowered and thrown into jail. The DC tells them that a fine of two hundred cowries will be imposed and that they may...
