Chapter 22 Summary
The Reverend James Smith is Mr. Brown's successor and he proves himself a quite different man, openly condemning Mr. Brown's policy of compromise and accommodation. Within the first weeks of his arrival he suspends a woman from church for pouring new wine into old bottles and for allowing her husband to mutilate their dead child (it had been declared an ogbanje).
While Mr. Brown restrained the zealots, they flourish under Mr. Smith. One such zealot, Enoch, sets off the great conflict between the church and clan that had been brewing all this time. During the annual ceremony held to honor the earth deity, Enoch unmasks one of the egwugwu, an act that is considered a great crime. Enoch boasts that they will not dare touch a Christian, and so one of the egwugwu strikes him with a cane whereupon Enoch tears off his mask. The others immediately surround the unmasked...
