In his absence, Okonkwo has lost his place among the nine masked egwugwu and has also lost the years in which he might have taken the highest titles. He remains determined to return with a flourish, and throughout his exile, he plans his homecoming. He intends to rebuild his compound, bigger and better than before; he will take two new wives; and he will display his wealth by initiating his sons in the ozo society. After Nwoye's departure, he calls for his sons and tells them that if any one of them wishes to follow Nwoye and be a woman, then they must do so while he is alive so that he may curse them.
Although he never stops regretting that Ezinma is a girl, during his exile she grows into a beautiful woman......
